How does it work?

The active ingredient Podophyllotoxin is antiviral in nature. It also prevents wart cells from dividing and spreading. Attacking the warts and the underlying virus can also prevent any warts from returning.

Over time the wart cells can no longer multiply and the wart eventually dies off. The antiviral properties in addition fight against the underlying infection with HPV. Over time this does lead to the warts to vanish and being replaced by healthy new skin.

What is Podophyllotoxin?

The active ingredient in Warticon is podophyllotoxin. It is a plant extract that is also known as podofilox. Warticon uses it in a 0.15% w/w concentration.

The ingredient is extracted from the roots of the Podophyllum plant. The plan is also known as the Mayapple plant. It is a toxic substance that originates both in North America and the Asian continent.

Native Americans have used the roots of the plant for medicinal and antiviral purposes over centuries. It has been used in those cases to treat many conditions including snake bites and parasitic worm related infections.

Podophyllotoxin has been used to treat genital warts staring in the 1930’s. In the 1940’s it was first documented in medical literature as a anogenital wart treatment.

Today podophyllotoxin is used in many prescription genital wart treatments like Warticon or Condyline.

In addition some of the ingredients are used to sterilize the treated area as well as moisturize the skin in order to speed up the healing process.

The other ingredients are

  • Propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216)
  • Methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218)
  • Butylhydroxyanisole (E320)
  • Purified Water
  • Sorbic acid
  • Phosphoric acid
  • Cetyl alcohol
  • Isopropyl myristate
  • Liquid paraffin
  • Fractionated coconut oil
  • Stearyl alcohol
  • Macrogol 7 stearyl ether

What is it used for?

Warticon is used for soft anogenital warts. Specifically those that appear on or close to the penis or externally around the vagina.

Based on the documentation it is to be used on individual or small clusters of warts. It should not be applied for widespread genital wart infections that cover a larger area of your skin. It is also not to be used for genital warts inside the vagina!

How to Apply Warticon Cream?

The standard application for Warticon is to use a small amount of the cream directly on the wart twice a day. Repeat this procedure for three days. Then wait for four days and start the cycle again.

The cycle should not be repeated more than 4 times resulting in a treatment period of 4 weeks. If the warts are still there after that then you should consult with your doctor!

What Research is there?

A study result published by PubMed shows that podophyllotoxin cream can indeed work to treat external genital warts. The study was conducted on 60 women with anogenital warts.

The cream was applied twice a day for three days each week. The overall treatment period was four weeks. The assessment was performed at termination and then three months after the conclusion of the treatment.

82% of the study participants showed an initial clearance of their genital warts. After three months 71% were still completely clear of genital warts. The total frequency of warts being cleared with the podophyllotoxin cream was 94%.

The study results can be obtained on PubMed at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7548288.

Where to purchase?

Warticon can be purchased online in countries like the UK, Ireland and New Zealand but you are required to have a prescription. Many of the online providers in those countries have doctors on staff that will provide a prescription after filling out a short online questionnaire.

In the US you will not find it in pharmacies like CVS or Walgreens and also not in retail stores like Walmart or Target. It is also not offered online at Amazon or other online retailers. Technically, you should be able to use one of the sites in Europe or New Zealand to get a prescription filled online and then have the remedy shipped to the US.

However, we do not advise to do that. If you need a prescription for any medication then see your doctor in person and have him or her evaluate your condition. It seems more than questionable to fill out a short questionnaire online and get a prescription for yourself. Even for relatively harmless ailments like anogenital wart infections it seems to be a better choice to have your doctor evaluate your condition before prescribing any medication!

What alternatives are there?

There are quite a few alternatives to Warticon for treating genital warts. Many of these alternative treatments have shown very good success rates.

Salicylic acid based remedies are usually not to be used on genital warts. The best wart remover for common and plantar warts specifically states that it should not be applied to genital warts!

The best alternative treatment to use is Tea Tree Oil which is a natural treatment for genital warts. You might want to dilute the oil to reduce its potency when using it on anogenital warts.

You can also use TCA to treat external genital warts. TCA is often used by dermatologists for treatment. Be sure to use a low enough concentration of the acid to ensure that there are no side effects like irritated skin.

Another natural treatment for condyloma is Witch Hazel. It is a gentle method to get rid of genital warts and practically without any side effects.

There are also various over the counter wart treatments available. One of the most commonly used is Wartamine. It uses a combination of known wart removers to specifically treat genital warts.

Another OTC wart remedy for condyloma is Terrasil. This treatment comes with different ingredients. Make sure to use the variant that uses natural ingredients to cure genital warts.
